Hilton Head Island hires new principal symphony conductor

The maestro is in: John Morris Russell Monday, 30 April 2012 11:5 By Mark Kreuzwieser For a rehearsal day in early April, Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra’s new music director and principal conductor John Morris Russell sure was laid back and relaxed. Why shouldn’t he have been? He’d just put away a breakfast biscuit and gravy platter at Bluffton’s Squat ‘n’ Gobble restaurant and was sitting in beach shirt and shorts on the terrace contemplating an 85-degree spring day in the bosom of the Lowcountry. Your average resident or tourist passing by probably would not know that they were in the presence of a world-class maestro. Russell has been serving the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra as principal guest conductor for the 2011-2012 season, and has expanded his role in our community while also continuing as conductor of the world-renowned Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. In past years, he served as associate conductor of the Savannah Symphony Orchestra, and for the past 11 years as director of music at the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, Ontario, Canada.Typically, Russell was in a chatty mood the day before conducting the annual April 3-4 Symphony Under the Stars. Probably the only time he isn’t ebullient conversationally is when he’s at the podium conducting. You might say he is a lover of life, and the player of musicians. Q: How did you catch the music bug? A: I’m a product of public schools (in his home town of Cleveland, Ohio). I had a fourth-grade teacher who walked up and down the aisles of our classroom, asking each of us, ‘what instrument do you play?’ If you didn’t come up with an instrument, you were (put in) choir. I played cornet. Music played an integral part of my education from the earliest age. Music was just a way of life. Everyone in my family played one instrument or another. In junior high and high school, I played in band, marching bands and orchestras. I was a trumpet player. We even had a jazz band, and that was pretty revolutionary back then, so they called it the jazz lab band. Can you imagine? Lab band! It made us sound scientific, I guess, and acceptable. Our poor band director, he had to work so hard. He’d get to school at 7 a.m. and work all day. Q: We heard you were a frustrated Tower of Power-wannabe... A: In high school, I joined a garage band. We were a band of horns, with a rhythm section and two female African-American singers. They were hot, and they made our band hot. We’d play at parties and proms, covering all the big horn bands at the time, like Chicago, Ohio Players, Average White Band, with some jazz thrown in like Chuck Mangione. I would sneak into the Cleveland Symphony concerts after waiting for an intermission. I had a strategy (he says with a mischievous grin, noting that he doesn’t advocate this scofflaw behavior). Q: What makes music so enthralling? A: Music has no walls. Music, all music, is just music, no matter what style it is. Look at the masters, the great composers. They are still listened to and performed today because their music crosses all boundaries. Beethoven, Mozart, all of them, they were rock and roll. The classical composers of the past were entertainers. Now, for me, it’s all about making their music come alive. Q: Who do you admire among symphony conductors? A: George Szell, who was the long-time music director of the Cleveland Orchestra. Jesus Lopez-Cobos, a Spanish music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra from 1986 to 2000. And, Erich Kunzel, who was the founding music director and conductor of the Cincinnati Pops. Hmmm... they all have Zs in their names. I’ve seen Leonard Bernstein conduct, but I’ve not met him. He was one of the few great composers who also are great conductors. Q: Being a symphony conductor must be a power trip. A: No, it’s not an ego thing. My approach is to ask, what does the music need to honor the composer? When I conduct a Haydn composition, I want people to say, ‘wow that Haydn was brilliant’ - not ‘wow, that Russell guy is brilliant.’ I always feel humble at the feet of the great composers. I could never, ever compose something so brilliant. I am blessed being able to conduct composers’ works. My role as conductor is to empower musicians in their performance, and my ego is not the way to accomplish that. I must work to earn the musicians’ trust and respect, and to be a good coach. The Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra has very, very fine musicians. Q: Why did you choose Hilton Head? A: The symphony, the musicians and the community at large are extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated support system in the (symphony’s) board of directors, led by Mary Briggs and Edward Parrish, president/ CEO and chairman, respectively. The corporate sponsors are very supportive. It is all about the art, but we must remember and be aware that it still is business. It’s good business to have this wonderful symphony orchestra for the overall community, including residents and visitors, plus the businesses here. The music attracts visitors, tourists and new and creative businesses. Q: We understand you have a special interest in Gullah culture. A: I look forward to immersing the symphony orchestra in the Lowcounty’s Gullah community and traditions. I find it fascinating and enlightening that many West African traditions came here and were forged in the terror of slavery. Gullah culture is just so rich - the spiritual music, the connections here with the north up to Canada through the Underground Railroad, and then you have the music, I think, evolving into gospel, blues, jazz and rock and roll. I recently learned that the term, and the song, “Kumbaya” really originated in the Gullah community right here on Hilton Head Island. Q: How are you acclimating to our Lowcountry and our unique cuisine? A: I have recently been on an exhaustive search for Frogmore stew. I’ve been over to Beaufort looking for it, and I haven’t been successful.

It was kind of nice getting my feet wet again 'covering' the waterfront...
Way back, from 1984 to around 1992, I roamed the waterfront, the port of Savannah, dreaming those maritime dreams, crazy with romance of freighters, longshore and tugboat battles, picket lines and stirring the Savannah Pilots Commission's pot.
Those were the days.

South Carolina’s Savannah River Maritime Commission members exchanged heavy sighs of frustration during their quarterly meeting on a raw wintry morning in mid-January as they surveyed the current status of the port of Savannah’s proposed deepening of its harbor ship channel.

Tradition National Golf Club Hosts Complimentary Golf Clinic

Hardeeville, S.C. – Having trouble with your golf game or need a tune-up, but don’t have the scratch to pay for a lesson?

Tradition National Golf Club at Tradition Hilton Head is hosting a complimentary golf clinic for all skill levels and age groups at noon Saturday, January 24.

The clinic will be led by David Wilding, Director of Golf at Tradition National Golf Club and a PGA Professional, and his staff. The session will cover all aspects of the game at Tradition National’s new, state-of-the-art practice facility.

Also, special rates and winter promotions for rounds of golf will be offered.

Tommy Fazio designed the new championship course, which has already hosted several tournaments, including the first-ever Under Armour College Golf Combine in July.

Couples Win Complimentary One-Year Golf Memberships at Tradition National Golf Club

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – Two couples won complimentary one-year golf memberships at Tradition National Golf Club, the new championship golf course designed by Tommy Fazio at Tradition Hilton Head.

John Lavery and Liz Gillespie, far left in the photo, and Carol and Ted Stanley, on the right in the photo, had registered for the complimentary memberships during Tradition Hilton Head’s Holiday Home Tours on November 22 and December 13.

Approximately 1,200 people who toured several model homes at Tradition Hilton Head on the two dates were invited to donate food items to receive a gift certificate for a complimentary round of golf at the community’s Traditional National Golf Club and to register for the one-year membership. Nearly 1,800 food items collected from the home tours were donated to Deep Well and Bluffton Self Help.

Deep Well and Bluffton Self Help Receive Food, Cash Contributions from Tradition Hilton Head

The Deep Well and Bluffton Self Help received hundreds of food items and $600 from Tradition Hilton Head on Tuesday, helping the charitable organizations assist needy families during the holiday season and unusually difficult economic times.

Nearly 800 items of non-perishable food items were delivered to the organizations, along with $300 each, on Tuesday, December 16, bringing the total of donated food items to nearly 1,800 from Tradition Hilton Head’s two recent Holiday Home Tours.

The charitable organizations said the contributions are doubly significant now, during a recession and the holiday season.

“I have been with Deep Well for eight years now, and I haven’t seen a Christmas with more families needing help,” said Lynn Dezeeuw, the Hilton Head-based organization’s president. “These contributions could not have come at a better time. This is a God send.”

Marty Sauls, public relations director for Tradition Hilton Head, said the community wanted to make an extra effort to help people in an economically difficult time.

“These are tough times for people, and we all need to pitch in,” Sauls said as he helped unload two SUVs loaded with food items donated at Dec. 13’s home tours. “With so many families in need of food and clothing, we all need to pull together.”

Linda Kaufman, president-elect of Bluffton Self Help, said she appreciates Tradition Hilton Head stepping up to help families throughout the Lowcountry.

“We are grateful for everything Tradition has done,” she said. “We have a volunteer who heard about us through Tradition and now is working with us three or four days a week.”

Tradition Hilton Head’s Eco-Friendly Water Reuse Partnership with BJWSA is First of Its Kind in S.C.

Tradition Hilton Head, a 5,300-acre, master-planned, sustainable green community, has joined with the Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority to provide the water utility’s first water reuse service for residential irrigation here.

While BJWSA has been a leader in reusing reclaimed water for irrigation of commercial areas and golf courses, Tradition Hilton Head is its first residential reuse project. BJWSA will supply reclaimed water for all of Tradition Hilton Head’s irrigation needs, including residential lots, common areas, landscaped medians and the community’s 18-hole Tradition National Golf Club.

“We are excited to join with Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority in this green and environmentally friendly initiative, which exemplifies Tradition Hilton Head’s efforts and commitment to being sustainable and green,” said Bob Swift, General Manager of Tradition Hilton Head.

“Our parent company, Core Communities, has a long and distinguished history of reclaiming water for irrigation of public green areas and golf courses as a significant way to conserve water,” Swift said. “Tradition Hilton Head reuses not only collected stormwater runoff for irrigation but also water recovered from BJWSA’s treatment plant - water that has been treated to standards that allows safe reuse.

“Essentially, treated water from BJWSA will supplement the stormwater runoff we collect at Tradition Hilton Head,” he said, noting that reclaimed rainwater is used for irrigating residential lots, public green spaces and Tradition National Golf Club, in addition to keeping lakes and lagoons filled.

The Tradition irrigation system is not only a BJWSA first, but the first system of its type in South Carolina, according to BJWSA. In the hot, humid Lowcountry climate, irrigation causes a huge increase in water usage during the summer months, and water reuse for residential irrigation is a significant step forward in using an alternative water source and reducing the peak demand on our drinking water system, BJWSA officials said.

For many years, BJWSA has been providing treated wastewater to golf courses for much needed irrigation — a win-win solution for this water-hungry industry. BJWSA serves 12 golf courses overall.
