SUMMARY
I have worked for three decades as a newspaper reporter, editor and photographer, magazine writer, and public and media relations manager. I am proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), InDesign and Adobe Photoshop. I have been responsible for news page design and layout, local and wire copy editing, photo and graphics design, reporting, editorial writing, and mentoring younger reporters, columnists and photographers. My recent writings include freelance for magazines and newspapers, blogging, Wikipedia entries, Internet articles, and Facebook and Twitter entries.

EDUCATION
Bachelor of arts in English and minor in mass communications (journalism independent study), Appalachian State University, Boone, N.C., 1979. Features section editor and reporter for the campus newspaper, The Appalachian, during freshman, sophomore and junior years.

I worked on the front desk and in guest services at a bed and breakfast in Savannah and a motel on Hilton Head.

Played a key role in the April 2005 launching of Bluffton Today, a nationally recognized daily newspaper that combined traditional journalism with Internet-based communication.

 Worked closely with other editors, reporters, photographers, page designers and nearly a dozen expert columnists recruited from the local business community
 Responsible for taking many of the photographs that appeared on the business pages and in Lowcountry Business Today

Carolina Morning News/Savannah Morning News February 1999–April 2005

Responsible for all news pages design and layout, local and wire copy editing, photo and graphics design, and some reporting, mostly Georgia Southern University, city government and business.
Editor • The (Claxton, Ga.) Enterprise 1996-1997
Covered all news and features, wrote weekly column and editorials, and directed and produced special supplements and tabloids. Coordinated contract and arrangement with new printer that produced first CMYK photographs and graphics in paper's history. Designed and paginated all news and editorial pages.
Reporter/Assistant City Editor • Savannah Morning News 1984-1996
As reporter, beats included the port of Savannah, environment, transportation, business, the military and city and county government. I was a staff co-winner of two Georgia Associated Press awards, for coverage of the mail-bomb murder of a Savannah City Council member and the campaign for and passage of the first roads sales tax referendum in Chatham County, Ga. As assistant metro editor, I supervised newsroom of 12 reporters, plus three bureaus.
